USS Iowa, BB-61

USS Iowa, BB-61

The focal point of the weekend’s photo outing, the USS Iowa Battleship.  She was commissioned in 1943, saw lots of battle in WWII, some in the Korean War and other action all along the way.  Currently she’s with the rest of the reserve and mothball fleet in Suisun Bay waiting to be turned into a museum ship.  I can’t wait for that day.  I have always been fascinated with the Iowa.  You can see in this photo a couple of the nine 16-inch guns on the deck.

  2. I like the image overall, but it’s been a bit over processed. The skies have serious pixelation which usually happens in a wonky HDR process job (normally the fault of the program for being too stupid to just do it right).

    • Hey Roman, long time no see. Welcome back. I’m with you on this. I wanted *something* to use for the Iowa, and I wasn’t horribly happy with any of the shots. It is really hard to photograph a long battleship when you have zero control of position. For me, this image was good enough to post here, but I did go the lazy route and not finish it in photoshop. If I ever decide to do anything with this, I might get a wild hair and clean up the noise. 🙂

  3. It’s a beautiful shot, and thankfully of ‘time gone by’; the Pacific Battleship Center has been awarded custody of the USS Iowa by the Navy. She will be a floating museum ship in San Pedro, California, open to the public on the 4th of July, 2012. As of 10/28/2011 she has been in the port of Richmond, for seaworthiness preparation for her tow to the port of Los Angeles in early 2012.

She is open on the weekends for tours right now (not Xmas eve & day); more info at http://www.pacificbattleship.com/blog . More photo-ops for you! I’m the Iowa photographer, and I never tire of photographing her.

I would like to share this photo with Flickr members on my (non-commercial) battleship Iowa set on http://www.Flickr.com/konabish , with photo credit to you.

I live in Orange County but have family in Benicia; I love seeing your other photos of this beautiful area.
